The partial government shutdown caused by President Trump's dispute with Congress concerning his request for a $5.7 Billion to build his border wall has resulted in the cancellation of thousands of immigration court hearings throughout the United States over the past three weeks. Many clients have called our office to inquire about the status of their cases, worried about whether they should take the day of their hearing off from work and plan to show up in court as scheduled.

During the shutdown, all non-detained hearings will be cancelled. Hearings involving detained persons will be heard on their scheduled date, but the courtroom assignment may change.

While the several immigration courts have their own local procedures in these times, most of our clients have cases scheduled in the Arlington Immigration Court. Arlington Immigration Court officials have informed attorneys that any given day's non-detained hearings will be cancelled if the shutdown is still ongoing at 6:00 A.M. on the previous business day. For example, the shutdown was not resolved at 6:00 A.M. this morning; therefore, all non-detained hearings scheduled in Arlington on Friday, January 11, 2019 will be cancelled. If the shutdown does not end by tomorrow morning (Friday, January 11, 2019) at 6:00 A.M., all non-detained hearings scheduled in Arlington on Monday will be cancelled.
